Abstract

1418197 Making strips for commutator segments; casting composite articles S I BERMAN and P M NIKIFOROV 5 April 1973 16244/73 Headings B3A and B3F [Also in Divisions E1 and H2] A strip for making commutator segments (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises, in cross-section, an outer copper part 1 (Fig. 2) and an inner steel part 2, and is formed by suspending a rounded steel core 2 (Fig. 3) in a mould (not shown) into which molten copper is poured in an atmosphere of CO 2 , the mould being shaped such that an ingot as in Fig. 3 is produced on cooling. To ensure good bonding between the copper and the steel, the mould is maintained above the fusion point of copper for 5-12 minutes in order to form a diffusion layer of copper in the steel. The ingot is then subjected to hot and cold press shaping in order to produce the trapezium crosssection strip (Fig. 2) from which the commutator segments are cut.
