Abstract

1416875 Sorting sticks MARTIN ROBERTSON & BAIN Ltd 13 Nov 1972 52234/72 Heading B2H [Also in Division B8] Sticks e.g. asparagus shoots, celery, rhubarb, broccoli, carrots and fish, are classified according to their orientation and length by an apparatus comprising conveyor belts 29b, 52 and 95 and rollers 40b and 97. When an asparagus shoot A is launched tip first by the roller 40b and conveyor belt 29b and it is of sufficient length, the tip of the shoot is inserted into the gap between the discharge belt 95 and the roller 97 and the shoot is carried away by the belt 95. When a shoot A is launched butt first it droops in the manner shown in broken lines in Fig. 20 because of the more limber character of the tip portion of the shoot and falls onto a conveyor belt 52. If a shoot is too short to bridge the gap between the conveyor belts 29b and 95, it falls through the gap onto the conveyor belt 52.
