Abstract

1413169 Optical apparatus WIRA 12 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 48179/72 Heading G2J Apparatus for optically simulating the appearance of a section of (e.g. woven) fabric comprises two or more supports 1, 2 adapted (e.g. by serrations 8) to hold an array of parallel yarns or threads 9, viewing means 5, 6 whereby the arrays can be viewed simultaneously and superimposed and masks 3, 4, one for each support, located adjacent respective supports 1, 2 and constructed to allow when in position viewing of only elemental areas of the yarns or threads 9 which together make up the simulated appearance of the section of fabric. The masks may each comprise an opaque plate with rectangular cut-outs or a transparent plate with opaque portions 11. The viewing means comprises in Fig. 1 a mirror 5 and a semi-silvered mirror 6. In a modification Fig. 5, (not shown) the supports 1, 2 are placed at right-angles and a single semi-reflector is placed between them at 45 degrees. In a further modification Fig. 6 (not shown), the supports 1, 2 are parallel but opposed, and a mirror and semireflector are placed between them so that the simulation is viewed along an axis parallel to the supports 1, 2. The simulation may be viewed using a telescope or projected on to a screen. An anamorphic lens may be used.
