Abstract
1413054 Electrophoretic coating compositions HOECHST AG 19 Nov 1973 [5 Dec 1972] 53544/73 Headings C3B C3P and C3R An acid, neutral or weakly alkaline aqueous thermosetting cathodic electrodeposition lacquer contains as binder, a polymerization or polycondensation resin, or a mixture thereof at least one resin component being present in the form of a nitrogenous base and/or being dissolved or dispersed in the water by means of a compound containing basic nitrogen. The compounds which are nitrogen bases are suitable as emulsifiers after neutralization with carboxylic acids or mineral acids. At east one resin is thermosetting and the proportion of free carboxyl groups is such that an acid number of 10 is not exceeded. The lacquers contain, as latent catalyst an ester of an aromatic mono- or poly-sulphonic acid or mono- or dicarboxylic acid. The amount of latent catalyst is such as to provide at least a 10% increase in the test hardness of the stored film according to DIN 53, 157. The composition may optionally contain an aminoplast and/or phenoplast and other adjuvants customary in electrodeposition. Examples relate to epoxy resin esters, polyester resins, e.g. an acid polyester of bis-2-hydroxypropyl)-ether of bisphenol A, neopentyl glycol and adipic acid reacted with 2-amino-2-ethylpropanediol-1,3, and acrylic resins containing OH groups. The compositions may be pigmented. Electrodeposition may take place, e.g. at 120 volts D.C., for 2 mins./30 ‹C. followed by stoving 20 mins./180‹ C.
