Abstract
1412442 Plate heat exchangers UNION CARBIDE CORP 13 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971] 47238/72 Heading F4S A heat exchanger has a heat transfer wall formed (e.g. by pressing, stamping or rolling) to provide on said wall a unidirectional plurality of bubble-like projections each having distributed around its periphery a plurality of load bearing areas d which an assembly are in abutment with (and may be bonded to) similar areas of an adjacent wall; the wall and projections having the following dimensional relationship: (a) Ratio H/D of between 0À05 and 0À2; (b) Ratio D/d of between 3 and 10. (c) Dimension D of between 0À2 and 2À5 inches.; (d) Wall thickness of between 0À003 and 0À25 inches, where the dimensions D, d and H are as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3A. A method of calculating the shape of the bubbles to provide isostress contours (defined in the Specification) is described. The heat exchanger preferably comprises a stack of hollow-plate members 30. These may be formed each from a folded sheet (as shown) or from two sheets with either marginal spacers or with their edges seamed together. The heat exchanging fluids may be in parallel-flow or in cross-flowing relation; and the projections may be disposed in a square, diamond, or triangular formation. Alternative materials suggested for the heat transfer wall are metals (e.g. aluminium, copper, steel and titanium), metal alloys (e.g. brass), clad metals, plastics and plasticcoated metals. The projections 31 which through the stack may be in alignment, or relatively staggered (Fig. 5C) may protrude either externally of the hollow members (Figs. 6, 6A, 6B) or internally of the hollow members (as shown) in which case external support members 34 may be provided. The hollow members preferably extend between headers (10, Fig. 5). Fig. 5D shows a modification in which the plate members extend beyond the edge seam to form external fins 16 which may have turbulence-promoting slots or dimples therein. A modification only briefly described comprises the wall folded to form a cylindrical or spirally extending heat exchange element.
