Abstract
1412141 Joint-making packing ENGINEERING COMPONENTS Ltd 15 Jan 1973 [13 Jan 1972] 1600/72 Heading F2B In a gasket 1 comprising sections 3 which, in use, are joined together in edge to edge relationship, the abutting edges are complementarilyshaped to positively locate them and are located with an adhesive 6 capable of forming a seal between the edges. The joints between adjacent sections are formed by a dovetail projection 4 engaging a corresponding slot 5 in the other. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, a cylinder head gasket comprises two sections 3A, 3D of different materials. The adhesive may be of the heat reactive type which may be sprayed on and dried and during installation of the sections, e.g. in an I.C. engine, remains inactive until subjected to heat generated by the initial running of the engine when the adhesive is activated and seals -the joints. Alternatively, the adhesive may be in the form of encapsulated rubber polymer and an associated catalyst and remains inactive until, during installation, the joint bolting pressure ruptures the capsules to release the polymer which then reacts with the catalyst to form a sealing film.
