Abstract
1404781 Rotary positive - displacement machines RAMSEY CORP 3 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 45573/72 Heading F1F Gas seals for a Wankel I.C. engine piston 10 comprise combined side and corner members 23 lodged in grooves 18, 13 and pressed against the casing end-walls and the radially-inner sides of the grooves 18 by portions 47, 48, 53 of U-section springs 22. A scarf joint is formed by stepped ends 27 of portions 26. Apex seals 30 engage with carriers 31 therefor lying in the grooves 13 and inter-connecting portions 25. Each portion 26 may have a sharp edge at 58. A groove 32 extends longitudinally of each portion 26. Tabs 84 engaging with slots in the ends of the carriers 31 prevent rotation of the latter, Fig. 10 (not shown). Conventional apex seals may replace the seals (30) Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown), the apex seal carriers can pivot. The members 23 and apex seals may be made of a polyimide resin filled or mixed with graphite or metallic materials e.g. approximately 20% graphite fibres and 20% graphite particles, by weight.
