Abstract
1409820 Marine rudders N KAUFER 14 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971 14 July 1972 2 Nov 1972] 57827/72 Heading B7V A single blade stern rudder has divergent surfaces 18 and 19 at its rear end leading to a maximum width 20 remote from the rudder shaft 21. The arrangement gives increased deflection of the screw stream during turning to give better manoeuvrability, particularly in inland waters. The leading edge 15 of the rudder is narrow and not rounded, so that the probability of the screw stream straying past it during turning is reduced. Plates 30, 31 and 32 project from the side of the rudder to assist in confining the screw stream. In other embodiments, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the divergent surfaces are formed by plates which project outwardly from the body of the rudder, which may be of aerofoil section, and which may be separated by slots from the body of the rudder.
