1409209 Mercaptocarboxylic esters SANKYO ORGANIC CHEMICALS CO Ltd 20 Dec 1973 [30 March 1973] 59258/73 Addition to 1358019 Heading C2C A process for preparing a mercaptocarboxylic acid ester of formula wherein each of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or unsaturated hydrocarbon group (either of which may optionally be carboxyl- or alkoxycarbonyl-substituted), a phenyl group, a substituted phenyl group, a carboxyl group or an alkoxycarbonyl group, provided that R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> may not all simultaneously be hydrogen atoms; and R<SP>4</SP> is a phenyl or substituted phenyl group, or a residue derived by removal of a hydroxyl group from an alcohol; which comprises reacting an α,#- unsaturated acid ester of formula with ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydrosulphide in the presence of CS 2 , and acidifying the reaction product. Examples prepare methyl 2-methyl-3-mercaptopropionate, 2 - ethylhexyl 2 - methyl - 3 - mercaptopropionate, methyl 3-mercaptobutyrate, methyl 3 - mercapto - 3 - phenylpropionate, methyl 3 - methoxycarbonyl - 3 - mercaptopropionate and methyl 2-methoxycarbonylmethyl - 3 - mercaptopropionate.
