Abstract

1,215,994. Disulphides. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 13 June, 1969 [3 July, 1968], No. 31674/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Disulphides of the general formula where R is an alkyl group containing at least 3 C atoms are prepared by reacting a compound XCH 2 CH = CHR, where X is a halogen, with thiourea and the reaction product is treated with an alkaline solution and then with an oxidising agent. The reaction is usually performed using NaOH and H 2 O 2 below 20‹ C. In the examples di(#<SP>2</SP> octenyl) disulphide and di(5,5,7,7 - tetramethyl #<SP>2</SP> octenyl) disulphide are prepared from 1-bromo-oceten-2 and the corresponding tetramethyl derivative, respectively (see Division C5 for use in lubricants).
