Abstract

1409112 Alumina; zirconia; refractory oxides CARBORUNDUM CO 7 June 1972 [15 June 1971 (3)] 1930/75 Divided out of 1409111 Headings C1A and C1J [Also in Division C4] A process for rapidly cooling and solidifying a melt of refractory oxide material comprises pouring the molten mass into a solidification chamber containing cooling media which are particulate materials which is different from the oxide melt and non-reactive towards it, while at the same time adding additional cooling media. The melt and cooling media may be introduced through a plurality of inlets. The cooling media may be metallic spheres such as of carbon steel of size 5-60 mm. The media may be separated from the solidified melt by means of a magnet. The solidification chamber may be rotated. The composition employed in the example consisted of 27-63% zirconia, 1À07% titania, 0À80% iron oxide, 0À23% magnesia, 0À03% sodium oxide, 0À035% carbon and the balance of alumina. Pure alumina and zirconia may be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,323,282.
