Abstract
1374493 Refractory linings for vessels NIPPON STEEL CORP 7 July 1972 [10 July 1971] 31855/72 Heading B5A The refractory lining in an open vessel, such as a ladle, tundish or tapping spout used for molten metal, is formed by charging the vessel 1 with particulate refractory material; slowly pushing a male mould member 4 into the material whilst vibrating the mould member to displace and compact the material to form the lining 3; withdrawing the mould member and drying and firing the lining. The mould member 4 may include a plurality of vibrators 5 which may not all vibrate at the same frequency. It may also carry extra loading weights 7. Suitable refractory materials for both components are silica, pyrophyllite, chamotte, mullite, alumina, magnesia or silicon carbide whilst the matrix materials may also include graphite, carbon, zircon and pitch. Water glass, pulp waste, phosphatic binders and water or tar may also be included. Several examples of appropriate compositions and operating conditions are given and in some instances additional refractory material is introduced after an initial period of compacting, additional weights also being placed in the mould member.
