Abstract
1407284 Hydrogen DELTA F CORP 27 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49658/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division H1] In a hydrogen generator 10 of the Kipp type for a fuel cell 12, the hydrogen is produced by reaction of a hydroxide solution 20 with a composition comprising aluminium or silicon particles and a powdered water-soluble inorganic compound, particularly a salt, the composition having been formed into a rigid porous mass or masses, e.g. wafer 28, through bonding together of the metal or silicon particles. The compound, particularly an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium halide, nitrate, phosphate, carbonate, borate, chlorate, sulphate or sulphite, or soluble salt of Zn, Sn, Cu, Cd, Mn, Bi, is stated to prevent or inhibit the formation on the solid reactant of a film of by-product which would progressively reducse the reaction rate. The solid reactant may be ferrosilicon containing up to 98% silicon, aluminium or preferably ferrosilicon alloyed or mixed with up to 3% aluminium. It is mixed with up to 50% of the powdered salt and the mass bonded by adhesive, sintering, or preferably by brief contact with hot alkali to form a surface coating which will function as bonding agent. The porous mass may be a rod which is then cut into wafers. The solid is preferably contained within a stainless steel mesh. When using ferrosilicon alloyed or mixed with aluminium, wafers of increasing aluminium content may be used as the reaction proceeds.
