Abstract

1403033 Tunnels &c NISHIMATSU CONSTRUCTION CO Ltd 11 Oct 1972 46900/72 Heading E1F In a method of constructing a tunnel under a road, railway, river or building, a plurality of pipes 3 are driven horizontally or nearer horizontally into the ground below the road &c to form a wall 6 of pipes having a whole configuration approximating that of the profile of the tunnel to be excavated, each pipe having coupling means 4 longitudinally disposed thereon, and thereafter the tunnel is excavated using the pipe wall 6 as a tunnel lining. The pipes which are preferably steel, are driven into the ground at the facing of a tunnel, into the side of an embankment carrying the road or rail, or a shaft (2), Figure 2 (not shown), is excavated on one or both sides of the road &c and the pipes driven in from the side wall of the shaft. Various coupling means are exemplified, Figures 3 to 5 (not shown), each being additionally provided with a jetting tube 10 to aid in excavation, or for injecting grout to seal the spaces between adjacent steel pipes. Pipes having coupling means are described and claimed in Specification 1403034.
