Abstract
1,257,569. Wells etc.; barrier walls in permeable strata. THYSSEN (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd., SHAFT SINKERS (PTY) Ltd., TAYLOR WOODROW CONSTRUCTION Ltd., and BOART DRILLING & CONTRACTING Ltd. 10 June, 1970 [13 March, 1969], No. 13350/69. Headings E1F and E1H. A waterproof barrier is formed in the ground by fracturing the ground to form cracks and injecting grout into the cracks. A mine shaft is formed by drilling two circles of holes 11 (Fig. 2) fracturing the space between the circles over the depth which the barrier is to. extend and injecting chemical or cement grout into the cracks. The cracks which may be held open by sand may be formed by use of elongated shaped charges, by injecting fluid under pressure, by mechanical wedging, or by water hammer effect. Additional holes 14 are drilled, and cracks 15 are formed and grouted to form a shaft bottom. As shown in Fig. 3 a shaft is sank through impermeable strata to a level 20, holes 21 are drilled and waterproof barriers 22, 23, are formed, the shaft is sunk to a level 24, further holes 25 are drilled and barriers 26, 27 are formed, and the process of drilling, fracturing, grouting and excavating is repeated as necessary. A tunnel may be extended through a permeable layer of the strata by a technique similar to that described with reference to Fig. 3. Before building a dam 40 cut-off curtains 41, 42 are formed by drilling holes 43, fracturing and grouting. (For Figures see next page)
