Abstract

1400884 Treatment of cracked gasoline IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Feb 1973 [13 March 1972] 11593/72 Heading C5E Cracked gasoline is treated by distilling to separate a first distillate containing all the components boiling no higher than 80‹ C., heating the distillation residue at 200-350‹ C., distilling the heated product to recover a second distillate boiling no higher than 250‹ C. and hydrogenating the second distillate. The cracked gasoline is produced in the thermal or steam cracking of naphtha or gas oil and boils in the range 0-250‹ C. The heating can be carried out continuously in a tubular heater or batchwise. The residue from the heating can be distilled by a flash distillation followed by fractional distillation. The hydrogenation can be carried out at a partial pressure of hydrogen of 300-500 p.s.i.g. in two stages, firstly in the liquid phase at 100-300‹ C. using a catalyst comprising Ni or Co together with Mo on alumina or Pd on alumina and secondly in the vapour phase at 300-600‹ C. using a catalyst of Pt on alumina or of Co + Mo on alumina; the catalysts are in the metal, oxide or sulphide forms. The hydrogenated product is subjected to solvent extraction using a solvent such as sulpholane, N-methylpyrrolidone, dimethyl sulphoxide, propylene carbonate, silver fluoborate, N-methylformamide, morpholine, alkyl carbamates or a mixture of diethylene glycol and/or dipropylene glycol with water, to separate an aromatic hydrocarbon product.
