Abstract

1400178 Lubricants; azo dyes MOBIL OIL CORP 19 July 1972 [17 Nov 1971] 33750/72 Headings C5F and C4P [Also in Division C2] A lubricant composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricant and an antioxidant amount of a mixture of p-p<SP>1</SP>-dioctyl diphenylamine and a substituted naphthylamine of formula where R is NO 2 or C 4 -C 20 alkyl, Ar is phenyl or naphthyl, R<SP>1</SP> is H or phenylazo, x= 1 or 2, and R<SP>1</SP> being H only when R is NO 2 . Specified lubricant bases are paraffinic and naphthenic oils, and synthetic oils such as polyglycols, polyolefins, polyacetals, siloxanes, diesters of dibasic acids, and esters of monocarboxylic acids with polyhydric alcohols. The base may be a grease. In examples, a pentaerythritol-C 5 -C 9 carboxylic acid ester is mixed with the dioctyl diphenylamine and N-2,4-dinitrophenyl - 1 - naphthyl - amine, 1,1<SP>1</SP>- dinaphthylamine or N(4 - tert - octylphenyl)- 4 - phenylazo - 1 - naphthylamine. N - (4 - tertoctylphenyl)-4-phenylazo-1-naphthylamine is made by adding an aqueous solution of benzenediazonium chloride to a 1,2-dimethoxyethane solution of N - 4 - tert - octylphenyl - 1 - naphthylamine.
