Abstract
1400071 Polarizing devices WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 20 June 1972 [21 June 1971] 28727/72 Heading G2J [Also in Divisions H1 and H4] A directional coupler comprises at least three dielectric material layers whose thicknesses and dielectric constants are such thaf wave energy of a predetermined frequency which is incident at a predetermined angle is split into transmitted and reflected components in proportions which are substantially independent of the kind of polarization of said wave energy. As described, a device 11 has three layers 12, 13, 14 of respective thicknesses d 1 , d 2 , and d 1 and dielectric constants # 1 , # 2 , # 1 . Wave energy propagating in the plane of the figure is directed along a path 15, and is incident at an angle # i . It has electric field components E 1 , E 2 respectively polarized parallel to, and perpendicular to the plane of propagation. Resultant corresponding transmitted components E 1t , E 2t are directed along a path 17 which is parallel to the path 15, and resultant corresponding reflected components E 1r , E 2r are directed along a path 18, which is at an angle 2# i to the path 15. It is arranged that at a frequency corresponding to a free space wavelength of # o , by making, where, k is an odd integer R is the relative proportion of incident wave energy to be reflected In a device for operation at 100 GHz
