Abstract
1499711 Carbo-nitriding steel GKN GROUP SERVICES Ltd 10 Dec 1976 [10 Jan 1976] 00919/76 Heading C7U A ferrous metal is nitrided in dissociated ammonia so that a "white layer" of iron nitride is formed, and is then subjected to a carbo-nitriding atmosphere whereby the nitride layer is converted to epsilon-carbonitride. Preferably nitriding is carried out at 480-560‹C and carbo-nitriding at 500-600‹C; the product may have a carbo-nitride layer of hexagonal Fe3N containing 2-3% carbon.
