Abstract
1,200,165. Hard-surfacing process. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan.3, 1969, [Feb.1, 1968], No. 577/69. Heading C7U. Metal parts are chromium-plated by a conventional process and are then heat-treated in a nitrogenous atmosphere under such conditions of time and temperature that the outer portion of the chromium layer is converted to chromium nitride while a diffusion bond is formed at the chromium - substrate interface. As particulary a 0À2% carbon steel is chromium plated and then heated for 3 hours at 1000‹ C in an atmosphere of 30% nitrogen 70% hydrogen; it may in some cases be desirable to use an inert gas rather than hydrogen.
