Abstract
1499028 Non-woven fabrics DEXTER CORP 16 July 1975 [17 July 1974] 29859/75 Headings D2A D2B and D1K A process for producing a tufted non woven fibrous web uses a fibre-collecting element 10 having a smooth surface 18 from which a multitude of apertures 16 with sharply defined edges extend. Fibres are deposited from a fluid dispersion on the surface 18 and in the apertures 16 to form tufts. The fluid is preferably aqueous with a viscosity of about 1 centipoise but this may be increased to about 300 cP to promote laminar flow with different fibre materials and lengths and different size apertures. A differential pressure may be applied across the element 10. After the tufts have been formed they may be consolidated, for example by a fluid sprayed from a nozzle 26 while the web is backed by a screen 28. The process may be carried out on a machine as shown in Fig. 5 to produce tufts on both sides of the web. Rotating drums 50 have apertured surfaces 52 and suction boxes 54, 56. Fluid jet nozzles 58 are used to consolidate the tufts before they are separated from the surfaces 52. A supporting scrim or continuous filaments may be fed in through a central feed chute 44.
