Abstract

1498136 Preparing high molecular weight water-soluble polymers HERCULES Inc 4 April 1975 13925/75 Heading C3P Water-soluble, substantially linear, high molecular weight polymers are prepared by irradiating with high energy ionizing radiation, at an intensity of from 1000 to 200,000 rads./hour to a total dose of from 1000 to 30,000 rads, an aqueous solution having a pH of 2 to 12 and containing 10-40% by weight of (a) a monomer of the formula CH 2 = CR-CO-Y, (b) a mixture of monomers of the aforesaid formula, or (c) a water-soluble mixture of at least one monomer of the aforesaid formula with (i) up to 50% by weight of vinyl sulphonic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof and/or diacetone acrylamide, or (ii) up to 10% by weight of another watersoluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer, wherein in the given formula R represents H or methyl and Y represents -NH 2 , -OM, wherein M is H, NH 4 , alkali metal or other cation yielding a water-soluble monomer, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are C 1 -C 4 alkyl and X is a monovalent anion; said aqueous solution also containing at least 3% by weight of at least one salt selected from various alkali metal or ammonium sulphates, chlorides, fluorides, bisulphates, and mono-, di- and tri-basic phosphates, and aluminium sulphate and aluminium chloride. The presence of the salt is stated to increase the rate of polymerization, increase the molecular weight of the polymer at a given conversion level, give a more linear polymer, and enable high conversion levels of monomer to polymer to be achieved. The polymer products are useful as flocculating agents, viscosity control agents in aqueous solutions, and as mobility control agents in flood water for recovery of crude oil from subterranean reservoirs. In examples the monomers used are sodium acrylate/acrylamide, quaternized dimethyl/- amino ethyl acrylate/acrylamide, acrylamide, and quaternized dimethyl/aminoethyl acrylate, and irradiation is effected with gamma rays from a Co<SP>60</SP> source. Specification 1,279,108 is referred to.
