Abstract

1495174 Fairleads INTERCONTINENTAL MARINE DEVELOPMENT Ltd and LAIRD GROUP Ltd 13 April 1976 [9 April 1975] 14561/75 Heading B8B A fairlead for engaging a cable 16a in an intermediate portion of its length comprises a curved guide 2 against which the cable rests as it changes direction, a curved support member 4 and resilient pads 6 supporting the guide 2 on the support member 4, the pads each being readily deformable in response to shear forces allowing the guide 2 to move a limited amount with the cable when that portion of the cable engaging the guide member is longitudinally displaced relative to the support member 4. Stops 4a at the ends of the support member 4 limit movement of the guide 2 whereafter further movement of the cable causes sliding thereof along the guide 2. Both the support member 4 and the guide 2 are formed as channel members, open in a direction radially outwardly of their curvature. Each resilient pad 6 comprises alternate layers of elastomeric material and metal plate offering greater shear resilience than compressive resilience. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, a hollow frustoconical support 24 supports through circumferentially special resilient pads 6, an inner hollow guide 26 having a convex inner circumferential surface for engaging the cable, axial movement of the guide 26 being limited by an upper stop 24a integral with the support 24, and a lower removable stop (not shown), facilitating disassembly of the fairlead. In this embodiment the circumferentially spaced resilient pads may be replaced by resilient pads of annular form.
