Abstract

1494964 Boring earth &c B J-HUGHES Inc 1 Oct 1975 [22 Nov 1974] 40200/75 Heading E1F Apparatus for handling pipe or drill collar stands P in a derrick for movement of the stands betweenthe centre of the derrick and a racked position 19 extending downwardly through the floor of the derrick, constrains the stands against undesired movement during the handling operation. The apparatus includes a crane C which is movable in a horizontal plane, a vertical guide post 21 pivotally supported by the crane, and a positioning device G located at the lower end of the post for moving the lower end towards and away from the centre of the derrick. The positioning device includes a horizontal arm 59 which is movable laterally relative to the derrick, and a pipe guide head 71 which is adapted to receive and guide pipes of different diameters. The pipe stands are supported at their upper ends by a lifting head 83 which is movable along the guide post by means of a hoist 74, 77. The crane includes two fixed tracks (23), Fig. 4 (not shown), a beam (29) which is movable in the direction of the tracks, and a supporting dolly 30 which is movable along the beam and which supports the guide post 21.
