Abstract

1489084 Imitating watermarks; security paper TULLIS RUSSELL & CO Ltd 28 Oct 1975 [29 Oct 1974] 46858/74 Headings B6A and B6C A watermark is simulated in a paper sheet by impregnation in a desired pattern by a fluent, transparentizing composition which is polymerizable upon activation by radiation, the impregnated sheet then being irradiated with suitable activating radiation. The composition is made up of unsaturated monomers, unsaturated prepolymers and radiation stimulated polymerization initiators, examples of which are specified. The composition is screen or gravure printed in the desired pattern on to one surface of the paper, and suction may be applied to the opposite surface during or after the printing operation. Solvent may be applied to the printed surface by a spray roller or pad before irradiation, which may be by electromagnetic radiation such as U.V., X-, or γ-rays, by particle radiation such as a or # radiation, or by high energy proton or neutron beams. Added security may be imparted to the marked paper by arranging the watermark pattern in the form of lines or dots exhibiting a Moire effect. The watermark may be in two or more colours. Alternatively, the mark incorporates a colour former or inhibitor so that, with a suitable reagent applied to the paper, either the watermark or the surrounding sensitized paper area changes colour. Two or more colour forming watermarks may overlap and produce different colours. In a further embodiment, both colour forming reactants are applied, in powder or capsule form, in the watermark, and produce a colour when the paper is stamped.
