Abstract
1488001 Machining contact lenses GLOBAL VISION (UK) Ltd 3 Oct 1974 [6 Oct 1973] 46775/73 Heading B3T In a method of making a contact lens having two mutually curved lens surfaces 90, 91 the circumference edge 92 surface of the lens is machined after machining one of the curved surfaces but before the machining of the other of the two curved surfaces. A lens blank 10 is located in a rotatable support 11 and a first cutting tool 20 is traversed in an arcuate path about an axis transverse to the axis of rotation of the lens blank and support to machine one of the curved surfaces on the lens blank, e.g. the concave surface 90. Without removing the blank from the support a second tool 30 is moved into contact with the edge 92 of the lens to machine the peripheral edge. The machining of the edge at this stage in the manufacture of the lens provides additional rigidity of the material during machining by edging tool 30 and the avoidance of handling by removal of the blank from the support. The two aforsaid operations having been completed a further tool 40 is applied radially to the lens blank to reduce the diameter of the blank and form a frusto-conical surface 93 adjacent the edge. The lens blank is then removed from the support 11 and secured to a second support 61 by a thermoplastic adhesive 60. A microscope 62 mounted on the machine is then used to determine the position of the crown 63 of the first curved surface and a further cutting tool 70 then machines the second of the two curved surfaces. A lathe for machining the lens is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 10 and includes a chuck 101, carried by headstock 102, which supports the blank support 11, a pivotable tool carrier 103 with the cutting tool 20 and edge cutting tool 30 mounted thereon for successive operation by pivoting the carrier 103. Cross slides carrying tools 111, and 109 respectively for initial machining of the blank and chamfering the lens edge, and a microscope 62 for detecting the crown of the first curved surface 90 for use in detecting the accurate location of the second curved surface. Although the concave surfaces is shown as the first to be machined, the convex may alternatively be the first surface to be machined.
