Abstract

1486239 Vessel TAYLOR WOODROW CONSTRUCTION Ltd 11 Nov 1975 [13 Nov 1974] 49186/74 Heading F2P A vessel comprises a prestressed concrete container 2, a chamber 3 in the container and a removable closure member 4 closing the chamber at one end, the closure member 4 is held in its chamber-closing position by hold-down means releasably anchored to the closure member 4 at a first anchorage, remote from said end of the chamber 3, and passing from this anchorage through the closure member 4 and through the container 2 to a second anchorage, also remote from said one end of the chamber and anchoring the hold down means to the container; the holddown means serving to prestress the container 2 in an end to end direction and including a stop means 10 intermediate the first and second anchorages and disposed to be clear of the container 2 when the closure member 4 is in the closed position and to bear on the container to maintain a prestress upon release of the holddown means from their first anchorages to permit removal of the closure member 4. Each hold-down means may comprise a single tendon extending between the first and second anchorages with stop means mounted thereon or they may comprise a first tendon 12 extending from the first anchorage to the stop means 10 and a second tendon 11 extending from the stop means to the second anchorage. The two tendons are coupled together by the stop means which is fixed to the second tendon 11 and releasably coupled to the first tendon 11. The closure member 4 may comprise a concrete disc with active and/or passive prestress applied by means of layers of steel wires 7 contained within an outer cam 8.
