1486240 Pipe connectors FESTO-MASCHINENFABRIK GOTTLIEB STOLL 14 Nov 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 49399/74 Heading F2G [Also in Division B3] A detachable connector for pipes comprises a connecting piece with an axial projection which has an outer surface part defining with the free end of the projection a part conical generatrix, and a coupling nut which can be screwed on to the connecting piece by a thread towards one end of the nut, the latter having a cylindrical section at the opposed end and apart conical section between the cylindrical section and the threaded section, the cone angle of the part conical section of the coupling nut being greater than the cone angle of the part conical generatrix of the axial projection of the connecting piece, the inner diameter of the nut being greater than the external diameter of a pipe to extend therethrough, contact between the pipe and nut being effected only at the transitional edge between the conical and cylindrical surfaces of the nut. In one form, the flared end 12, Fig. 1, of a metal pipe 3 has the same angle of taper as the frusto-conical end 4 of a connector 1 on to which is screwed a nut 2 having a frusto-conical inner surface 9 whose angle of taper is a multiple of the angle of taper of the flared pipe end, 8. The nut 2 grips the pipe 3 only at a rounded transitional edge 14 between a cylindrical surface in the nut and the frustoconical surface 9. The pipe may alternatively be of plastics, Figs, 2, 3 (not shown). The metal pipe end is flared by inserting a tapered mandrel which acts on clamps holding the pipe to increase the clamping force the further the mandrel is inserted, Figs. 4-6 (not shown) see Division B3). The tapered frusto-conical end of the connector may be spaced from the adjacent thread by a recessed ring-shaped portion (32), Fig. 7 (not shown), to form a stop (32a) adjacent the thread. In another embodiment, a connector 42, Fig. 8, has a bulge 46 with a surface 50 of arcuate section, and tangents touching the arcuate surface 50 and the adjacent free end of the connector define a frusto-conical generatrix having a cone angle less than the cone angle of a frusto-conical surface 49 in a nut 45. An annular washer 53 of rubber, &c. 53 lies inside the nut 45 and against the surface 49. A similar washer may lie between the flared end 41 of the pipe and the end of the connector 42.
