Abstract

1,192,579. Pipe couplings. AMP Inc. 25 March, 1968 [13 April, 1967], No. 14186/68. Heading F2G. A pipe coupling, particularly for connecting a plastics pipe 5 to a threaded boss 15 on a metal tank 16, comprises a plastics member 1 having a through bore 2 including an enlarged diameter portion 3 for receiving the pipe 5, which may be secured by crimping a metal band 6 around a weakened section 7 of the sleeve 1, the member 1 also including an integral extension 10, which is adapted to enter a bore 17 in the boss 15, and an integral annular rib 9 which is deformable towards the extension 10 when urged into contact with a face 18 by tightening of a nut 11, the rib initially extending parallel to the axis of the member 1. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the face 18 is formed on a boss 15 and is convex, but a concave face may be used instead (Fig. 3, not shown). A sealing ring (25, Fig. 4, not shown) may be fitted between the rib and the extension. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, the rib 9 is deformed directly against the face of a tank 37 which is drilled and tapped conically to receive a ribbed conical end portion of the sleeve (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) which provides the extension 10, the ribs of the extension being forced into the threads as shown when the sleeve is screwed into the tank.
