Abstract

1484059 Cam followers; levers MIDLANDROSS CORP 19 Dec 1974 [26 April 1974] 22762/75 Divided out of 1484058 Heading F2K [Also in Division B7] A railway car coupler (see Division B7) comprises an automatic mechanism operative during uncoupling from a mated coupler to cause automatic pivoting of a rotor shaft 32, Fig. 2, and consequently unlocking and opening of a knuckle 12 of the coupler. The automatic mechanism comprises a lever member 42 biased by a spring assembly 44 for pivoting about the axis of a hub portion 61 such that when, during uncoupling from a mated coupler, the knuckle of the mated coupler moves to release pressure on the front face 46b of a plunger 46, the lever member 42 pivots to cause a roller 64 to engage a cam 40 and effect pivoting of the rotor shaft 32. As illustrated, the lever member 42 comprises: an arm 82, Fig. 8, bearing a trunnion 82a for engagement in a slot of the plunger 46; an arm 62 which has a bifurcated end carrying the roller 64; and a pair of arms 70 having recessed bearing portions 70a for receiving trunnion (74a), Fig. 4 (not shown), of the spring assembly 44.
