Abstract

1483195 Flattening anodes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Dec 1974 [7 Jan 1974] 00625/74 Heading C7B [Also in Division B3] An anode whose working surface has to be flat within a close tolerance so as to permit the anode/ cathode gap to be a minimum is flattened by applying a load to press the working surface against a heated solid shape of fused silica. The anode is made of film forming metal such as titanium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum or tungsten or alloys thereof. The silica may be in block or sheet form. The anode has a working surface 16, a bridge piece or conductor bar 17 and a current lead-in tube 18. The silica block 1 is supported on firebricks 8' on a base 9 of mild steel. Further firebricks 8 space the block from the side walls 4, 5. The flattening is achieved by hydraulic or spring plungers 12 or deadweights on an upper frame 10. The upper frame 10 is drawn towards the base 9 by one or more spring balances 11. The silica block is cleaned of particles by compressed air before the anode is positioned thereon. The block is heated to at least 300‹C by heating elements 3 and a load of up to 10 pounds/sq in is applied. The pressure is applied for at least 0À5 hour. The anode is a foraminous structure of parallel elongated members on a support. The members may be blades, strips, rods or U-shaped or hemispherical channels. After flattening the anode may be machined.
