In an electrolytic cell for producing aluminium from a solution of aluminium oxide in cryolite, a pre-baked carbon anode 20 is supported by a steel carrier plate 19 welded at 22 to an aluminium or copper rod 18 having a diametral slot 22, Fig. 2, the weld being interrupted at the slot.
