Abstract
1482925 Fibre-containing heat-insulating compositions FOSECO TRADING AG 29 Oct 1974 [26 Nov 1973] 54690/73 Heading C3N A method for the production of shapes of a fibre-containing heat-insulating composition comprises mixing together a granular or powdered refractory material, fibrous material, an amount of a foaming agent sufficient to cause the composition to foam during the mixing operation, and a binding agent selected from a colloidal oxide hydrosol, starch, natural gums, natural resins, or polyvinyl alcohol or acetate, forming the composition to the desired shape, causing or allowing the binding agent to set or harden, and drying the shape. Methods involving the use of a fibrous material selected at least in part from refractory oxide fibres, carbon fibres and metal fibres and a binding agent selected from naturally occurring gums and resins are disclaimed. The colloidal oxide binding agent may be colloidal silica sol or colloidal aluminina sol. The granular refractory may be sand, silica flour, olivine, chamotte, alumina or any refractory silicate. Suitable fibres are of silica, alumina, zirconia, carbon, calcium silicate, zirconium silicate, aluminosilicate, glass, steel, chromium, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, wool, cotton, paper, rayon, nylon, polyester and polyacrylonitrile. Preferred foaming agents are alkyl sulphates, alkyl aryl sulphonates, sulphonated epoxidized aryl alcohols and naphthalene sulphonates. The specific examples describe the formation of slabs from compositions comprising: glass fibre, colloidal silica sol, an equal weight mixture of silica flour and silica sand, and an alkyl sulphate (1); glass fibre, olivine sand, wheat flour (starch) and an alkyl aryl sulphonate (2); and glass fibre, refractory filler, polyvinyl acetate emulsion and alkyl aryl sulphonate.
