Abstract

1480898 Fibre-containing heat-insulating compositions FOSECO TRADING AG 16 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973 30 Nov 1973] 45500/73 and 55758/73 Heading C3N A method for the production of shapes of inorganic fibre-containing refractory heat-insulating composition comprises mixing together a granular or powdered refractory material, inorganic fibre selected at least in part from refractory oxide fibres, e.g. silica, alumina or zirconia fibres, carbon fibres and metal fibres, an amount of a foaming agent sufficient to cause the composition to foam during the mixing operation and a binding agent, forming the composition to the desired shape, causing or allowing the binding agent to set or harden, and drying the shape. Part of the inorganic fibre may be silicate fibre, e.g. calcium silicate, alumininosilicate or glass fibre. The metal fibres may be of steel, chromium, nickel, tungsten or molybdenum. The refractory material may be sand, silica flour, olivine, chamotte, alumina or any refractory silicate. The binder may be an alkali metal silicate, naturally occuring gums or resins, starch, or a synthetic resin such as a urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde or furane resin. A precursor for a binding agent may be added at an early stage of mixing the composition and at the end of mixing an accelerator or catalyst added to convert the precursor to an effective binding agent. A small amount of water may be added to the mixture sufficient to assist the foaming agent to establish a substantial foam. Preferred foaming agents are alkyl sulphates, alkyl aryl sulphonates and napthalene sulphonates. The hardening or setting of the mixed formed composition may be accelerated by adding a catalyst for the binder or, in the case where an alkali metal silicate is used, passing an acid gas, e.g. CO 2 , SO 2 , HCl or SO 3 , therethrough. The specific example describes the production of a shape from a mixture of alumina fibre, glass fibre, urea-formaldehyde resin, water an alkyl sulphate surfactant, and an equal weight mixture of silica flour and silica sand.
