Abstract

1482638 Underwater storage tanks FOSTER WHEELER POWER PRODUCTS Ltd 1 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 47613/73 Heading E1H An underwater oil storage tank 12, associated for example with an oil production platform 26, has an oil conduit 42 leading to the top of the tank, and a water conduit 30 leading to the bottom of the tank. The conduits 42, 30 may be located within the legs 16, 18 of the platform 26. The pressure within the tank is kept below the pressure of the water outside the tank by means of a pump 36 which maintains the water level 54 in the conduit 30, below the outside water level 52. This reduces the risk of leakage of oil from the tank 12. Water is removed by the pump 36, or allowed to enter through valve 34, to automatically keep the water level 54 constant below the surrounding water level, for example at 14 metres below the. water level 52. The oil level in the conduit 42 varies between the limits A and B according to the amount of oil in the tank, and the level may thus be used as an indicator of the quantity of oil stored.
