1481204 Wrapping blocks of cigarettes GD SpA 20 Nov 1974 [21 Nov 1973] 50274/74 Heading B8C A cigarette packeting machine comprises intermittently rotatable wrapping heads 1-4 each having a plurality of radially accessible compartments Z for receiving blocks of cigarettes, grippers 10a, 11a, 12a, 13a and 14a, 15a for transferring unwrapped or partially wrapped cigarette blocks between the wrapping heads 1-4 and plate members 26, 40, 43 which move temporarily between the cigarette blocks and the wrapping material X, X1 to act as supports against which the wrapping material is folded. The grippers 10a, 11a, 12a, 13a, 14a, 15a are carried on pivotally mounted levers 10-15 which are oscillated by cams 1-9. Respective plate members 26, 40, 43 are associated with each compartment Z of the wrapping heads 2, 3 and 4. In operation a block of cigarettes is pushed from a packet conveyer 22 into a compartment of the wrapping head 1 from which it is subsequently removed at a station IZ3 and transferred with an inner wrapper X into a compartment of the wrapping head 2 by the grippers 10a, 11a. This transfer causes the wrapper X to be U-folded about the block of cigarettes. A pair of jaws 25 then close and position plate members 26 which are carried thereby, between the arms of the U-folded wrapper so that upon movement of the cigarette block to a station IIZ3 the arms of the U-folded wrapper are folded against the plate members by an oscillatory folder 28 and a stationary guide 29. At the station IIZ3, the plate members 26 having been withdrawn, the ends of the wrapper X are folded in by oscillatory folders 30, 31 and 32. At a further station IIZ5 the block of cigarettes enclosed in the inner wrapper X is transferred with an outer wrapper X1 into a compartment of the wrapping head 3 by the grippers 12a, 13a. This transfer causes the wrapper X1 to be U-folded about the inner wrapped block of cigarettes while an edge portion of the wrapper X1 is folded against one end of said wrapped cigarette block by a projecting folding member 39. A plate member 40 which forms part of a horizontally reciprocable unit 38, is then positioned between the arms of the U-folded wrapper X1 so that a vertically reciprocable folding finger 36 and a stationary guide 41 can fold said arms against the plate member 40. The plate member 40 is withdrawn as the thus partially formed packet is moved to a station IIIZ5 whereat it is transferred by the grippers 14a, 15a to a compartment in the wrapping head 4. During this transfer a projection 42 folds a further edge portion of the wrapper X1 against said one end of the inner wrapped block of cigarettes. An oscillatable folder 44 at a station IVZ3 and a stationary folder 45 then complete the folding of the wrapper X1 by folding flaps over a plate member 43 positioned against said one end of the wrapped cigarette block. At a station IVZu the wrapped cigarette block is pushed from the wrapping head 4, past a revenue stamp applicator member 49 and on to a discharge conveyer.
