Abstract

1480067 Refractory fibres and felts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 July 1974 [17 July 1973 25 Feb 1974] 33917/73 and 8367/74 Heading ClJ [Also in Divisions B5 D2 and H5] A felted product comprises synthetic polycrystalline metal oxide fibres having an average diameter from 0À5 to 5À0 microns and an inorganic binder. The fibres may be refractory fibres, e.g. alumina, zirconia, titania, silica, or thoria fibres. The inorganic binder may be added to an aqueous dispersion of the fibres prior to formation of a felt therefrom. It may be added as a pre-formed colloid or sol, or as a water-soluble material convertible to a colloid, e.g. by acidification, hydrolysis and/or heating. The latter may be sodium silicate, or an oxychloride or basic acetate or formate of Al and/or Zr. Preferred inorganic binding agents are hydrated oxide sols of alumina, titania, silica, zirconia, or a mixture of two or more thereof The alumina sols may be a fibrous boehmite sol. Organic binding agents, fillers, dispersing agents, retention aids, precipitants and/or coagulants may also be present in the aqueous dispersion. The product may be made by papermaking techniques, vacuum-forming, or casting. The wet felt is dried, and then fired. The felted product may be used for thermal or electrical insulation purposes.
