Abstract

1478984 Furnace atmosphere JOSEPH LUCAS Ltd 27 Nov 1974 [29 Jan 1974] 03986/74 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] A carburizing atmosphere is produced in a furnace at 775‹-1025‹ C by introducing methanol which decomposes to form CO, which in turn produces C + CO 2 , wherein a hydrocarbon gas, e.g. propane or natural gas, is introduced to react with the CO 2 and maintain the desired carbon potential. An example refers to the carburizing of steel.
