Abstract

1457862 Production of reducing gas CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUESCENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 9 May 1975 [10 May 1974] 19599/75 Heading C5E A method of producing a hot reducing gas comprising CO and H 2 by reforming a hydrocarbon fuel with a supporter of combustion comprises the steps of (a) producing a high temperature gas (at a temperature of, for example, 2000‹ C.) by means of a plasma medium and (b) adding fluids comprising a supporter of combustion and/or a hydrocarbon fuel to the high temperature gas such that reforming reactions occur to produce the desired reducing gas at a temperature of, for example, 1000-1100‹ C. The high temperature gas may be a non-oxidising gas, such as nitrogen or a reducing gas obtained from a mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and supporter of combustion having a stoichiometric amount of oxygen. Alternatively the high temperature gas may be a reducing gas obtained by reaction of the hydrocarbon fuel with an excess of the supporter of combustion. In this case, the fluids added in the second step should contain the appropriate amount of the supporter of combustion to ensure that the product contains the desired quantities of CO, H 2 and if necessary only hydrocarbon fuel should be added in the second step. Suitable supporters of combustion include steam, CO 2 , oxygen, air, blast furnace gas, exhaust gases from direct reduction or combustion furnaces, or residual reducing gas including an excess of combined oxygen as CO 2 , H 2 O. The hydrocarbon fuel may be a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon, or a gas such as coke furnace gas containing CO, H 2 and CH 4 .
