Abstract

1478769 Refrigeration; tubular heat exchangers BENDIX CORP 23 May 1975 [24 June 1974] 22840/75 Headings F4H and F4S A Joule-Thomson cryogenic cooling apparatus comprises a head assembly 12 having a finned tube 50 wound around a frusto-conical plastics body 36 and a body 16 having a tapered surface 18 leading to a blind axial bore 20 which forms an expansion chamber 22. As shown, at one end the tube 50 is connected to a passage 26 in a stem 24 connected to a pressure fluid source 30 and mounted in the body 36 and, at the other end 64, the tube is closed and inserted into a recess 66 in the body 36. The end portion of the tube 50 adjacent the closed end is formed with an orifice 62 opening into the chamber 22. A filament 70 is wound around the finned section 56 of the tube 50 to prevent direct communication between the expansion chamber 22 and the atmosphere to promote heat exchange between the external gas flow and the tube 50. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,216,189.
