Abstract
1478429 Evaporator; absorber METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG and BAYER AG 17 Dec 1975 [8 March 1975] 51722/75 Headings B1B and B1L A process for effecting mass transfer between a gas and a liquid, e.g. absorbtion or evaporation comprises injecting the liquid (9) into the upper portion of a vertical Venturi tube absorber (2) to flow concurrently with the gas (1), collecting a large part of the injected liquid in a sump (2a) below the outlet end of the vertical Venturi tube absorber, feeding the gas together with the residual liquid below the outlet end of the vertical Venturi tube absorber and above the sump into a substantially horizontal Venturi tube absorber (5), feeding the mixture of gas and liquid from the horizontal Venturi tube absorber into a settling chamber (7), which contains a mechanical separating zone (6) for a removal of fine droplets in the upper portion of the settling chamber before a gas outlet (8), collecting the liquid in a sump (7a) at the bottom of the settling chamber, and injecting liquid into the outlet end of the vertical and/or horizontal Venturi tube absorber to flow in countercurrent to the gas. Further liquid may also be injected into Venturi 5 co-currently. The absorbtion of sulphur trioxide in sulphuric acid and the concentration of sulphuric acid by evaporation are referred to.
