1478490 Desulphurizing oils F B HASKETT 4 Sept 1974 38596/74 Heading C5E The sulphur content of a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon fraction is reduced by a continuous process in which the fraction is contacted with a dispersion of finely divided sodium metal in a liquid hydrocarbon containing a minor amount of a lower alkanol or of the sodium derivative of a lower alkanol, a liquid hydrocarbon stream is withdrawn from the contact zone and at least a portion of the stream is replenished by the addition of lower alkanol and sodium and returned to the contact zone to treat additional hydrocarbon fraction. Examples relate to the treatment of a sulphurous crude oil and a gaseous fraction containing hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans. A gaseous hydrocarbon 1 is treated in the tower 2 with a dispersion of sodium in a kerosene boiling within the range 300-500‹ F. and containing 0À1-20% ethanol (based on the weight of the sodium) and leaves the tower via line 18. A stream 3 is withdrawn from the tower, mixed with make-up sodium 4 and make-up lower alkanol 15, subjected to shearing at 5 to disperse the sodium and recycled to the tower. A slurry 12, containing sodium sulphide, sodium metal, and sodium alcoholate is withdrawn from the bottom of the tower and filtered and washed at 13; washed sodium sulphide is removed via line 17 and the liquid hydrocarbon stream 14 is recycled.
