Abstract

1475660 Measuring angular velocity electrically FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 27 May 1975 [20 Sept 1974] 23122/75 Heading G1N The angular velocity of coupled shafts 22, 26, Fig. 1, is determined by the frequency of operation of a magnetically operated solid state switch 48, as produced by a cylindrical permanent magnet 44 fixed to shaft 22, having a plurality of alternate N S poles round the circumference. The switching action is accentuated by a fixed permanent magnet 76 which is positioned to enhance the magnetic flux through switch 48 when faced by a S pole on magnet 44 and reduces the flux when the switch is faced by a N pole on magnet 44. The switch 48 may comprise a Hall plate element which switches a transistor on and off. The device may be used to measure the speed of the transmission of a motor vehicle, and a speedometer cable may also be plugged into the squared upper end 74 of the driven shaft 22.
