Abstract

1474259 Drill bits S C SKIDMORE 9 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 43657/74 Heading B4C [Also in Division E1] A rotary/percussive drill bit 10 includes a bit body 11 having a cylindrical portion 16 and a frusto-conical portion 20 ending in a flat end face 12 and a plurality of hardened inserts including inserts 14A on the end face 12, gauging inserts 18 on the cylindrical portion 16 and symmetrically arranged helical rows of inserts 22 on the frusto-conical portion 20, the spacing between the inserts 22 in each row being less than the width of the inserts 22. Each row of inserts 22 effectively establishes an elevated ridge which urges cuttings around and past the bit as it is rotated. The body 11 may also be formed with helical grooves 28 and openings 30 for the discharge of drilling fluid. A frustoconical transition surface 24 having inserts 26 may be formed between the surface 20 and end face 12. The entire bit may be given a coating of hard material, e.g. a chrome based material.
