Abstract

1343040 Boring earth and rock F E STEBLEY 26 April 1971 11424/71 Heading E1F A solid wear-resistant sintered metallic carbide insert for forcible insertion into an opening 50 in a working face 52 of a drill member, comprises a generally polygonal body portion 18 having at least twelve sides 26 which form an interference fit with the sides 56 of the opening, and a frusto-conical wedging portion 22 which wedges in a rim portion 60 of the opening. The sides 26 may be tapered toward the base 20 or may be longitudinally concave. A cutting head portion 24 may be provided, which may be hemispherical (as shown), chiselshaped, or frusto-conical. The carbide may be tungsten or tantalum carbide. The drill member may be a rotary-percussive bit, or a roller cutter.
