Abstract
1474095 Fusible resistors ALLEN-BRADLEY CO 5 Sept 1974 [24 Sept 1973] 38813/74 Heading HIS [Also in Division H2] A resistor comprising an insulating substrate 3, e.g. of alumina, and a resistive film 5 deposited thereon has a fusible link 21 which provides electrical continuity between the ends of the resistor and comprises a metallic layer 12 which melts at a pre-selected temperature to open-circuit the resistor. When molten the fusible material preferably wets contacts 8, 9, see Fig. 5, at the edges of layer 12 rather than the surface of substrate 3, which may be flat or cylindrical. As described, a resistive film 5 of metal, carbon or cermet material is deposited on a core 3 and silver-glass contact bands (6, 7, 10, Fig. 2, not shown) are applied to the ends and centre of film 5. An insulating, e.g. resin, coating 13 is then applied, except over centre band 10, and band 10 is divided into the two contacts 8, 9 by removing material down to core 3, (Fig. 3, not shown). After applying a sensitizing material to the gap, fusible layer 12 is formed, for example electrolytically. Layer 12 comprises cadmium, silver, indium, tin, lead, zinc or a combination thereof. The value of the resistance is adjusted by forming a helical groove 14 in film 5, and an oxidation-inhibiting flux is coated over layer 12. Finally lead wires 2 and a further resin coating 18 are provided. An arrangement is envisaged in which seriallyconnected resistive film 5 and fusible link 21 are provided in thermal communication on opposite surfaces of an integrated circuit chip.
