Abstract

1466569 Resistors acting as fuses ERIE ELECTRONICS Ltd 27 Sept 1974 [5 Oct 1973] 46744/73 Heading HIS [Also in Division H2] A resistor, which performs the function of a fuse, comprises a substrate 1, e.g. of alumina or glass, carrying a resistance element 2 and terminal paths 5, 8, which are so configured that when excess current flows through the resistor an expected line of fracture of the substrate due to thermal stresses passes through at least one of the paths 5, 8 to open-circuit the resistor. The part of the resistor to be fractured may be defined by a groove or grooves in the same or opposite surface of substrate 1 as element 2 (Figs. 2-5, not shown). Alternatively a line of weakness is defined by a scored line, a series of holes or notches 34, 35, Fig. 9. Terminal tags 7, 10 crimped to the paths at 6, 9 permit connection of the resistor to printed circuitry and may be resilient so that they separate the parts of the substrate when it fractures. The resistive material of element 2 may comprise a metal oxide, e.g. ruthenium oxide, preferably with a glass frit; alternatively carbon may be used. Element 2 may be in the form of a meander path of the same materiaYas paths 5, 8. Insulating strips of lacquer or glass may cover paths 5, 8.
