Abstract
1473683 Separating radioisotopes HOECHST AG 3 Oct 1974 [4 Oct 1973] 43030/74 Heading G6R The radioisotope MO-99 is separated from uranium fission products by subjecting a solution of the fission products, with molybdenum in the Mo (IV) state, to one or more of each of the following steps in any order: (a) treating the solution with an adsorbing agent, washing with acid, and eluting the Mo-99 with an alkali; (b) treating the solution with free or combined silver to precipitate silver iodide. The adsorbing agent used in step (a) may be Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , ZrO 2 or TiO 2 , the washing acid may be 0À1-5 N HNO 3 , and the eluant a solution of NaOH, KOH, ammonia, or trimethylammonium hydrooxide. In step (b) iodide and iodate may be added to the solution first to convert iodine to iodide, and the solution is then contacted with AgNO 3 solution, freshly-precipitated AgCl, or finely dispersed silver. The solution may be further treated successively with silver nitrate and potassium iodide and then filtered through silver chloride. Such treatment may also precede steps (a) and (b). To form the original solution of fission products, irradiated UO 2 or U/A1 alloy may be dissolved in alkali or acid and treated if necessary with an oxidizing agent, e.g. sodium nitrite, hydrogen peroxide, or chloric acid. The Mo-99 may be supported on a packed column from which high purity technetium-99 m, for use in medicine, is obtained by elution.
