Abstract
1472871 Burners J J DEWALD 17 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 16825/74 Heading F4T Apparatus for the combustion of crude oil comprises a boom 20, Fig. 1, connected to an oil well platform, a burner 23 having means for atomizing the oil, and conduits 31, 32, for supplying the oil and gaseous atomizing medium to the burner. The boom is pivoted to the platform at 47, or it may be welded thereto, and the atomizing medium may be air, steam, or natural gas, or mixtures thereof. There are two burners 23, Fig. 10, and each is surrounded by a water tube 40 connected to conduits 34 by flexible conduits 35, Fig. 1, and having nozzles 42, 43, Fig. 10, directed towards the burners and back towards the boom to prevent overheating. Each of the burners 23 comprises a disc-shaped plate 79, Figs. 11, 12, which has ports 89 through which the gaseous atomizing medium supplied through conduit 32 escapes, so as to draw oil from the annular space 87, which is then broken up into droplets and forced through ports 91. In a modification, a burner (26), Fig. 13 (not shown), has water, liquid oxygen, or a mixture of these, injected into the stream of oil and gaseous atomizing medium prior to ignition through a conduit (109). A combustion chamber 121, Fig. 14, may be placed over burner 23 replacing water tube 40, Fig. 10, and the chamber has a Venturi-like effect, in that air is drawn into the upstream end of the chamber at 122 to assist in the combustion process. The chamber is connected to the burner by brackets 127, and can be adjusted upstream or downstream. A water ring 123 having adjustable nozzles 125 is provided.
