Abstract

1470662 Coating method and apparatus PLASTIC COATINGS Ltd 18 July 1974 [3 Aug 1973 22 May 1974] 36916/73 and 22769/74 Headings B2E and B2L [Also in Division Dl] A method of coating an elongate article with powder comprises vibrating a coating channel of substantially V-form cros-section, continuously cycling the coating powder within the channel, a proportion of the powder forming a compacted body in the channel and passing the article through the channel so as to coat the article with powder while supporting the article on the compacted body during its passage through the channel. An apparatus comprises a coating channel along which the article is passed, means for vibrating the coating channel, an inlet and outlet for the continuous cycling of coating powder in the coating channel, wherein the channel is of substantially V-shaped cross-section closed at its apex so as to cause the formation of a compacting body of coating powder within the channel to support the article during its coating. In the figure a powder box 9 is provided with downwardly convergent internal walls 11, and 12 to form a coating channel 10. The box 9 is provided with vibrating means 16 such as an electromagnetic vibrator operating at a frequency of 50 c.p.s. to compact the coating material 15. The walls 11 and 12 are provided with a roughened or matt finish and may be for example of wood or grit-blasted metal. The coating material 15 is continually applied from hopper 19. The method may be employed for coating metal tubes and wire.
